Ostomy refers to the surgically created opening in the body for the discharge of body wastes.
The most common specific types of ostomies are:
| Colostomy |
The surgically created opening of the colon (large intestine). A colostomy is created when a portion of the colon or the rectum is removed and the remaining colon is brought to the abdominal wall. It may further be defined by the portion of the colon involved and/or its permanence. |
| Ileostomy |
A surgically created opening in the small intestine, usually at the end of the ileum. The intestine is brought through the abdominal wall to form a stoma. Ileostomies may be temporary or permanent and may involve removal of all or part of the entire colon. |
| Urostomy |
A surgical procedure which diverts urine away from a diseased or defective bladder. |

Pouching Systems include a one-piece or two-piece system. Both kinds include a skin barrier and a collection pouch. The pouch (one-piece or two-piece) attaches to the abdomen by the skin barrier and collects the diverted output, either stool or urine. The skin barrier protects the skin from the stoma output and is as neutral to the skin as possible. Used to meet individual needs both in the hospital and in everyday life. This includes skin-friendly adhesives, effective odor filtering, superior anatomical fit, and functional design for easy handling. |

Flextend is an extended wear, synthetic skin barrier which is designed to be the most resistant to stoma output. Pouches
CenterPointLock Closed – with Filter
Closed Pouches: A pouch that is not drainable from the bottom. Usually, when it needs to be emptied, it is removed and thrown away. Most often, a person with a colostomy would use this type of pouch.
CenterPointLock Drainable – Clamp Closure
A pouch that opens from the bottom to empty the contents. A drainable pouch requires some type of clamp on the bottom to keep it closed. A person with a colostomy or ileostomy (NOT a urostomy) would use this type of pouch. An integrated filter allows gas from the pouch to pass through a small piece of charcoal which contains the odor.
Karaya 5
Karaya 5 is a natural skin barrier that makes it particularly well suited for people who have sensitivities to synthetic skin barriers. Karaya pouches are pre-sized with a round skin barrier opening.
Some reasons for selecting a Karaya 5 One-Piece Pouching System:
- Stoma is round
- Consistency of discharge from the stoma is mushy or formed
- Have experienced sensitivity to other synthetic skin barriers
- Wear time expectations are within the three to five-day range
